Packaging for sweets and for confectionery products

Packaging is a key step in the presentation and preservation of artisanal desserts. It is not only a functional protection, but also a powerful communication and marketing tool. Customized packaging and wrapping can express brand identity, enhance the product, and create a memorable customer experience. From pastry trays to decorated bags, every detail helps distinguish the product, make it recognizable and more attractive. Careful packaging conveys attention, quality and professionalism, which are fundamental elements for those working in the confectionery industry, whether artisanal or commercial.

Custom cake wrapping and wrapping

Customized confectionery packaging is an essential component for those who want to differentiate themselves in the marketplace and build customer loyalty. Whether confectioners, chocolatiers, bakeries or artisan workshops, the use of custom wrapping and packaging with coordinated logos, colors and graphics reinforces the visual identity of the brand and enhances the value of the finished product. Boxes, trays, bags, or ribbons can be custom-made, even in sustainable materials, to tell the company’s philosophy and make every purchase a small gift. In addition, packaging directly affects the perception of quality and freshness, helping to position the dessert at a higher end of the market. Choosing custom packaging therefore means investing in one’s image and customer experience, increasing the perceived value of the product.

Advantages of cake packaging

The food packaging is a highly sensitive and specific field that is concerned with selecting the most suitable packaging solutions for specific foods, depending on their composition, production technique, shelf life, but also with attention to special details, often tailored to a specific product.

Among the various areas of food packaging, that of sweets is very diverse, as are confectionery products: sold loose or packaged, fresh or dry baked goods, containing milk and eggs, more or less perishable, fragrant, susceptible to humidity or dry climate, rather than particularly demanding in terms of storage or consumption. In short, packaging for desserts must be particularly versatile so as to provide some important benefits.

Fresh products, for example, such as leavened pastries must be able to be stored for a short time but retain fragrance and aroma, while dry confectionery, such as cookies and many snacks, have a longer shelf life and therefore their packaging must be able to be designed to be resealed after consumption and in a material that protects the contents for a longer period of time.

Plastic films are the most suitable material that provides the best performance for both fresh and dry products, with some specific accommodations in terms of film composition and packaging design, with special preformed packaging rather than the application of accessories.

Another example: some confectionery products, such as chocolate, are particularly sensitive to external agents such as temperature, which is why packaging for chocolate will need to take this peculiar aspect into account by providing adequate thermal protection and the best possible insulation from heat. The advantage of heat-proof packaging can be crucial for the preservation of a product especially during the summer season, when temperatures soar risking ruining the appearance and quality of confectionery and chocolate products, especially during the transportation and storage phases of the goods.

A similar argument can be made for ice creams, by far the most delicate confectionery products of all, which need not only to be stored in special thermal conditions but also not to be subjected to temperature changes that completely compromise their integrity. Confectionery packaging with insulating properties is the most suitable solution for such special and “demanding” foodstuffs.

Materials for cake packaging

The strategic choice of materials for cake packing is the basic requirement for successful and successful packaging.

Given the susceptibility of the confectionery product to moisture and temperature, it is necessary to use specific materials that have excellent insulating and barrier-effect qualities to protect the products as much as possible from changes in temperature, water and liquids but also air and dust.

Plastic films are ideal for food-contact containers, but sometimes for baked goods, sweets and chocolate, simple polyethylene film may not be enough-that’s when technology comes to our aid! Thanks to special manufacturing processes, plastic films can be laminated with various other materials, for example aluminum, which boasts photoreflective properties and therefore tends to protect the contents from possible exposure to the sun.

Aluminum itself, either as a laminated film or in the form of a stand-alone film, is often used extensively to coat different types of containers for baked goods and confectionery: in fact, it is an excellent ally of confectionery packaging: we find it in films that seal yogurt pots, jars of spreads and instant coffee, but also pouches for coffee or films that coat chocolate, either in plain or laminated versions.

Plastic films and aluminum also allow the application of useful accessories, from tabs that facilitate opening to closing tabs, all of which aid and extend the storage of confectionery products.

Types of packaging

As anticipated, packaging for desserts must be effective in protecting products and preserving them. For this, the types of containers are designed ad hoc depending on the shelf life of the product, as well as by the occasion and mode of consumption, all of which influence the choice of a particular design and packaging. Let’s look at the main types of packages and their characteristics.

Envelopes with adhesive flap

Made of plastic film on a reel, the pouches are adaptable to any desired size and therefore perfect for bagging a variety of confectionery products from chocolates and chocolate bars to bars of all sizes.

The application of a special adhesive attachment allows the bags to be resealed for transport or stored in the cupboard, waiting for the next occasion of consumption. If the film in question is laminated with aluminum, it will also be able to protect the contents from light and heat, even for long periods, and is therefore best suited for packaging products such as chocolate, which usually has a long shelf life and can be consumed in small portions.

Cake bags

Whether packaged individually or in groups, the sweets are packed properly and effectively in bags made of plastic films. Lightweight and space-saving, these containers fit the contents and can be thicker or thinner and reinforced depending on the confectionery inside: whether soft or crumbly, delicate or tough.

Cake boxes

Cake boxes are also rightfully a favorite packaging for sweet and pastry products, especially fresh ones.

Made of co-extruded plastic or cardboard, often with an inner lining of aluminum foil, pastry boxes protect the contents and allow them to breathe so that they can maintain fragrance and eliminate physiological moisture in the short time frame within which the product is to be consumed.

For large retailers, on the other hand, cardboard dessert boxes, whether for snacks or chocolate bars, often serve as secondary packaging, while the product is in contact with more durable materials such as trays, plastic or aluminum film.

Single-serving pouches for desserts

Whether on supermarket counters, at the coffee shop, or inside vending machines, sweets packed in single-serve pouches in single-serve pouches are becoming increasingly popular. In addition to the wrapped flowpacks traditional, double-sealed wrappers, pouches are also very useful and versatile doypack, which allow the package to stand upright and get a better display of its marketing messages, as well as being practical both for consumption, even of sweets in liquid format such as juices, smoothies and beverages, and for storage, especially when equipped with reclosing zippers or spouts and screw caps.

Wrapping for multipacks

Multi-pack confectionery packaging, i.e., secondary packaging that contains numerous individual portions inside, is widespread in large-scale distribution. In this case, the primary packaging, which is in direct contact with the food, will be the wrapper to which more attention should be paid in terms of performance and barrier effect, while the outer layer will be mainly for aesthetic and branding purposes.

Twist wrappers for bow-rolled candies and sweets

One particular type of candy packing is candy wrappers. Traditional candy wrapping involves the use of plastic films, often laminated to a thin aluminum film, with excellent twist-resistant qualities, so that the “twist” closure can be achieved.

Many baked goods, sweet but not limited to baked goods, are also packed in vertical pouches with a staple closure, which allows the contents to be protected from air and moisture, although not hermetically. Depending on the product, the most suitable type of bag can be chosen, balancing aesthetics and functionality.

Easter egg sheets

A final example of confectionery wrapping deserves a separate discussion. In fact, the chocolate egg is a particular confectionery product that is not only particularly sensitive to temperature, but also decidedly fragile and delicate, which therefore must not incur shocks and mechanical stress, or else be irreparably compromised.

To wrap Easter eggs, it is a good idea to choose a particularly strong film, combining a plastic film with an excellent barrier effect with a heat-protective aluminum one. To enable customization of the pack on the outside, which is decisive for successful sales, it may be necessary to employ an additional plastic film, this time selecting it on the basis of its aesthetic performance, which should be exceptionally bright and eye-catching, with the possibility of applying sophisticated decorations, with color effects and details in hot colors.
